NEW YEAR’S CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

SANTANA 56, VICTORY CHRISTIAN 47

One of the key aspects to a teams ability to win is to overcome any type of adversity. On Friday night the Santana Sultans overcame the officials to come away with the victory.

The officials in the first half really put the Sultans at a disadvantage as they called them for six fouls compared to only 1 on Victory Christian.

Despite being called for the six-team fouls the Sultans never wavered as they would never trail after being down 2-0 to start the first quarter. Leading the charge in the first half for the Sultans was Brandon Simmons who scored 8 points and Desmond Williams who scored 13 points including a pair of long rangers in the first half. The Sultans would lead at the intermission 33-21.

Victory Christian in the third quarter came out in a flurry as they would outscore the Sultans 14-9 but unfortunately, their big guy 6’8” Christian Ubochi would foul out of the game with a couple of minutes remaining in the third quarter.

With the big guy in the middle missing the Sultans took advantage the rest of the game and outscore Victory Christian 14-12 in the fourth quarter.

Leading the charge for the Sultans was Brandon Simmons as he corralled a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards and he dished 2 assists and had a block, Desmond Williams finished the contest with 20 points, Ben Hart scored 4 points and dished out 6 assists and hauled in 3 rebounds and finally Jake Kelchner who is described as a beast which he showed on the night as he had a couple of very impressive defensive plays over bigger guys finished with 6 points, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Santana with the win has now won three in a row and improves to 5-10 and will next take on their cross-town rival West Hills in a 7:30 PM matchup on Saturday night at Santana.
