RANCHO BERNARDO –  Records are meant to be broken and usually when they are it is a night that the player won’t soon forget. Unfortunately that player plays for Rancho Bernardo and is Matt Araiza who kicked his way close to the record books.

Araiza a two-time San Diego Section Kicker of the Year helped lift the Broncos to a 23-7 victory over the Valhalla Norsemen in a first round Division I playoff game.

On the night it was the leg of Araiza who booted three field goals from 32, 29 and 26 yards which gave him 11 on the season. With the 11 his career total is 36 which broke the record of former Bronco and SDSU kicker Nate Tandberg who kicked from 1993-95.

Another record that Araiza is close to is point total as he now has 250 career points. He is currently 11 from the section record set by former St. Augustine kicker Jordan Congdon from 2002-04.

The Broncos rolled the Norsemen on offense as they racked up 376 of total offense with 226 yards of those coming through the passing game of sophomore quarterback Noah Morris. On the ground the Broncos racked up 150 yards and were led by Tahj Martin who rumbled to 78 yards while carrying the ball 20 times.

Valhalla on the other hand had trouble on the offensive side of the ball. Returning for them at quarterback was Bryan Madriz who had missed the last few games. On the night he was able to only amass 112 yards through the air as Valhalla totaled only 210 yards on the night as a whole. He also threw a touchdown pass for the only points on the night for the Norsemen.

With the victory the #7 Broncos (6-5) who now have won five games in a row will now advance next week to take on #2 Eastlake. On the other side #10 Valhalla will end the season on an eight game losing streak and finish the season 2-9.
