STEELE CANYON 25, OTAY RANCH 7

SPRING VALLEY – The last time these two teams met down in the South Bay the Steele Canyon Cougars were able to pull out a 14-13 victory. This season was another story as the Cougars put together things right away in front of their home crowd.

Steele Canyon would get on the board first as they would kick 31-yard field goal by Jonathan Kenney to lead 3-0 after one period of play. The Cougars would add to their lead in the second quarter as Nathan Barnett would break away from a would-be Otay Ranch defender and find Chance Johnson who would rumble his way past the defense all the way to end zone for a 53-yard score to make it 10-0.

Defensively the Cougars were doing the job in holding Jonte “Puka” Stewart in check as he only threw for 94 yards and would score the only Mustang score of the evening on a keeper.

The Cougars would add to their lead in the third quarter as Kenney once again came through with his leg. This time he would boot a 31-yard field goal to make it 13-0. Steele Canyon would flash some special teams brilliance in the third quarter as Johnson fielded a punt in which he would take it all the way back to the house untouched 79-yards to make it 19-0.

Barnett would add the final score for the Cougars in the fourth period to make it 25-0.

On the evening, Barnett had 183 total yards as he passed for 140 yards and ran for 43 with one touchdown pass and another rushing. Also for the Cougars, Johnson would amass 173 total yards of offense on the evening which included 33 rushing, 61 receiving with a touchdown and 79 on the punt return for another score.

Steele Canyon, however, did commit 11 penalties but these didn’t hinder their performance as they were able to outgain Otay Ranch 279-148 in total yards offensively.

On the defensive side of the ball, both Johnson and David Lipscomb led the team in tackles.

With the victory, the Cougars should jump over the Mustangs who came in ranked one spot ahead of them in the MaxPreps Division I rankings.

Next week Steele Canyon takes the road to take on the Mira Mesa Marauders.
