These two teams met twice last season, once in the regular season and the other time was in the playoffs and both times the results were the same. Both games ending in Steele Canyon victories and both scoring affairs 52-26 and 36-22.

This time the Marauders led by new head coach Chris Thompson had the Cougars at home and also the fact that the Cougars graduated a bunch of players off of last year’s state Div. 3-A championship team.

However, graduation didn’t seem to matter for the Cougars as they used their reloaded lineup to score on all five of their first-half possessions and would rack up 582 yards of total offense which included the ever impressive stat of zero punts.

Leading the way for the Cougars was the ground game led by senior tailback Kenneth Watson who was able to tally 233 yards on 15 carries after coming into the game only having managed 181 yards rushing total. Besides the rushing yards, he was able to fund the end zone twice which included a back-breaking 80-yard defense splitting into the clear score with just over a minute remaining.

Things started off on the right foot for the Marauders as versatile quarterback Noah Tumblin was able to hook up with Albert Lemon for a 66-yard score to make it 7-0. The Cougars would respond with a couple touchdown runs by both Watson and Nathan Barnett to take a 14-7 lead. However once again the big play hurt the Cougars as Tumblin again was able to find Lemon for the score on a 44-yard pass play to knot the game at 14-14.

With the game tied the Cougars took momentum into their own hands and turned the tide on their side as they were able to score on three consecutive possessions. Barnett was able to hook up with Chance Johnson for a 63-yard score, he would then call his own number and find his way to the house for 44-yards and on the third possession drive down the field and find Chris Carter for 9-yards and give Steele Canyon a 35-14 lead.

On the night, Barnett threw for 168 yards on 7-of-11 passing and two scores while scrambling for 95 yards on 14 carries and a couple of touchdowns. For his efforts, he was named the San Diego Friday Night Lights Player of The Game.

For the Marauders, Tumblin completed 13-of-18 passing for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns while rushing for 108 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-1 and have won 4 consecutive games since losing to Carlsbad on opening night while Mira Mesa was looking to start the season 5-0 for the first time since 1990.

Next week for Steele Canyon is a big home league game against the Granite Hills Eagles who they met twice last season splitting the two contests with both being close games.
