The Foothillers took on the Ramona Bulldogs looking to finish up the Winter Classic tournament on the right foot and indeed they did.

Grossmont in the first quarter pretty much took command from the get go as they built their lead 16-9. Leading the way for Grossmont in the first period was Austin Odom who made a couple three pointers in scoring 7 points. However it was the Foothillers defense and also the ability to out rebound the Bulldogs that set the tempo.

More of the same in the second quarter for Grossmont as again they set the tempo as they were able to outscore Ramona 17-12 to take a 33-21 lead at the break.

Grossmont right away in the second half was able to build their lead and keep things going as a team. In the second half they outscored Ramona 24-23.

For Grossmont, Austin Odom led all scorers with 24 points as he canned 4 three pointers and also was a perfect 4 of 4 from the foul line. Also pitching in was Myki Moreland who did his damage in the fourth quarter as he scored 11 points in the game and Morgan Stidum went a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line and nailed a three pointer for a total of 9 points.

With the win the Foothillers are now 4-7 and will next play next week.

Both teams went back and forth in the first quarter and it was the Monarchs who were able to procure a 10-7 lead after one period of play. The second quarter was more of the same but the Nighthawks did have various opportunities to take the lead in the contest but couldn’t take advantage which allowed Monte Vista to lead 21-19 at the break.

Del Norte in the second half battled the Monarchs until they finally were able to take the lead in the third quarter but the Monarchs kept it close and actually retook the lead with about four minutes to go in the quarter on a three ball to lead 29-27. The Monarchs would push their lead with a 5-0 run but Del Norte answered with breaking of the Monte Vista press to cut the lead 31-29 in the third quarter.

However the monarchs were able to extend their lead 37-33 thanks to a couple three balls by Deondre McHayle. The third quarter would finally finish up with Monte Vista leading 41-35 thanks to a 1-3-1 zone that was giving the Nighthawks trouble and also McHayle was heating up from behind the arc.

Both teams started the final period no well as Del Norte turned the ball over 6 times and missed a couple of front ends and Monte Vista started 0-5 from the field. However that all changed as the Monarchs were able to slowly work their way to pulling away as they led 50-40 with about a minute remaining.

The El Capitan Vaqueros who have been on a little roll the last few games in winning their last 4 games looked to extend their streak to 5 games. Unfortunately they ran into the Komets who were able to take advantage of their opportunities and hand the Vaqueros its first loss in five games.

Scoring for the Vaqueros was Jakob lopez who punched in 13 on the night. The Vaqueros next play in the new year on January 3rd against Coronado at Coronado High.
