GROSSMONT TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP

SAINT AUGUSTINE 2, RANCHO BERNARDO 1

The defending Open Division CIF Champions the Saint Augustine Saints took on the Rancho Bernardo Broncos in an afternoon contest in the 40th Annual Grossmont Tournament out at West Hills.

Both teams went back and forth early on but it would be Saints who would strike first as Jorge Ahuage took advantage of a deflection by the Broncos goalkeeper and kicked it into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the first few minutes of the first half.

After the early goal by Saints, both teams went back and forth and Saints had a few opportunities to stretch the lead including a missed shot inches wide of the net.

Saints in the second half was able to take advantage on an opportunity as Antonio Pedilla was able to put one in the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The Broncos after not being able to create many opportunities finally were able to get one as Chris Malham was fouled in the box setting up the penalty kick. Malham was able to make it count as he scored to make it 2-1 but that was as close the Broncos would get as Saints kept attacking and attacking the Broncos side of the field.

RANCHO BERNARDO 1, LA COSTA CANYON 1

The Broncos earlier in the day took on the La Costa Canyon Mavericks and were able to come back and muster the tie.

The Mavericks were able to get on the board first as they would score in the first five minutes of the game to go up 1-0.

The early goal for the Mavericks almost stood but Rancho Bernardo in the second half finally got one with three minutes remaining in the game when Ethan Kingery nailed one to make it 1-1.

“It was a tough game which took us a while to get going but we finally did. The first half it went back and forth but in the second half I felt we were able to keep it on their end of the field for a long period of time.” Said Broncos coach Kurt Trecker.

 

MONTGOMERY 2, WEST HILLS 0

The Montgomery Aztecs took on the West Hills Wolf Pack and were able to come away with the shutout victory.

Both goals for the Aztecs came in the second half as Enrique Sanchez found the net twice for the Aztecs to claim the victory.

 

SANTANA 3, OLYMPIAN 0

The Sultans took on the Eagles of Olympian and pretty much put the game away within the first fifteen minutes of the contest.

Santana in the first half would receive goals from Mason Moore and also Lane Dukes who found the back of the net twice and also assisted on another goal.

Santana on the day had plenty of opportunities for more but the early goals did the trick for them.

Goal keeping wise Tim Caraveo made 4 saves in the fifty nine minutes he played and Zach Hirt who came in relief also made a save.

Santana made those three early goals holdup as they were able to limit the Eagles opportunities on their side of the field.

 

SANTANA 2, SAN DIEGO ACADEMY 2

The Sultans after dispatching the Olympian Eagles earlier in the day took on the Cavaliers of San Diego Academy in the afternoon game of the day.

The Cavaliers who will be one of the favorites in their division this season early on were able to strike the first blow to take a 1-0 lead in the first half.

The lone goal for the Cavaliers would hold up and they would lead 1-0 at the break.

Things were looking pretty dank for the Sultans as it looked like they would drop the contest but with about three minutes remaining they were able to find the net to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams would go back and forth but in the end the score would remain 2-2.

Scoring for the Sultans was Omar Nuristani and Lane Dukes who scored would score his third goal of the day as he had two goals in the earlier contest. Assisting on both goals was Sam Odenkirk.
