40TH ANNUAL GROSSMONT TOURNAMENT

OPEN DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

#3 TORREY PINES FALCONS 1, #9 LA COSTA CANYON MAVERICKS 0

In a battle between two of the best teams in the county out of the Avocado League the #3 Torrey Pines Falcons who edged #4 Saint Augustine Saints 5-4 on penalty kicks in their Semi-Finals contest last Saturday took on the #9 La Costa Canyon Mavericks who edged Mission Hills 1-0 in their Semi-Finals contest on Saturday.

Both teams went back and forth in the first half as the officials let the teams play. However a foul was called against La Costa Canyon in the first half in their own box which gave the Falcons a golden opportunity to strike first via penalty kick. So up stepped Tyler Weinrich to try and take advantage and was able to sneak it past the La Costa Canyon goal keeper to make it 1-0. That goal would stand up in the first half as each team had opportunities but both goal keepers and defenses came up big when needed leading to the one goal advantage for the Falcons at intermission.

Things started in the second with both teams coming out on fire as once again the officials would let both teams play.  The physical play and the fact that the officials let them play brought heckling from the stands but none of it mattered as each team battled. The Mavericks late in the second half would have a golden opportunity to tie things up but unfortunately couldn’t put it past the Falcons goalkeeper. They would get another shot but again miss as the ball went out of bounds.

The loss for the Mavericks was their first on the season and now their record stands at 5-1-2.

With the win the Falcons claim their 7th Grossmont Tournament Championship in a row and also more times than any other school in tournament history at the top level. Also with the victory they now push their winning streak to 6 games which included all five of their contests in the Grossmont Tournament and overall record to 6-0.
