COUGAR CHARGE COMES UP SHORT AGAINST SAINT AUGUSTINE

2018 EASTCOUNTY PREP FOOTBALL

CIF DIVISION I QUARTERFINALS

BY ADAM PAUL

#4 SAINT AUGUSTINE 28, #5 STEELE CANYON

In what was almost dejavu for Saint Augustine on Friday night as the Steele Canyon Cougars (9-3) came back to almost wipe out a 21 point deficit ended up holding on for the seven-point victory.

A couple weeks ago Saints played Madison but like every other game in the county was called due to lightning. However, Madison and Saints would end up making the game up the following Monday. Unfortunately, Saints would blow a large three-score lead and end up losing the contest.

Fast forward to a current time leading 21-0 with Saints leading the Cougars knew they needed to get something and indeed they did as Wesley Neely III zipped his way through the defense for the long score to make it 21-7. They would score a couple more times to erase the three score deficit and pull within 28-21. However with the ball, late the Cougars, unfortunately, fumbled on a snap that would hit the receiver who was coming across and Saints would recover.

The defense for Saint Augustine came up big early on leading 7-0 thanks to a quarterback keeper courtesy of Angelo Peraza when Malcolm Williams stripped Nathan Barnett and rumbled his way 65 yards to the house to make it 14-0.

Unfortunately on the Steele Canyon Cougars couldn’t keep the momentum going from the previous few weeks despite Neely III and his 170 yards on the evening which included long runs of 63 and 49 yards.

On the other side, Saints would counter with Byron Cardwell who was able to muster 76 yards on 21 carries. Passing wise, Angelo Peraza threw for 181 yards on 13-of-21 passing.

The loss by the Cougars snaps their 5-game winning streak and also dashes their hopes of repeating as CIF Champions and also possible State Champions.

Saint Augustine (8-4) with the big victory will host #9 Mission Hills next Friday night in the Semi-Finals.
