RANCHO SAN DIEGO (8-30-19) – In one of the more anticipated matchups on the weeks slate of games, the home team Steele Canyon Cougars led by a ferocious defense were able to hold down the visiting Madison Warhawks.

In the first game of the season, the Cougars defense held the Eastlake Titans after giving up a couple of big plays and this week the challenge was to hold the very talented Ke’onte Springs from running loose. For the most part, the mission was accomplished as Springs only tallied 160 yards with most of those coming late in the second half.

Despite giving up nearly 200 yards to Springs on the ground the Cougars defensively were able to control the rest of the game.

Springs would give the Warhawks the early 7-0 lead when he dashed his way to the house for a 50-yard touchdown run.

Not to be outdone scoring wise was Wes Neely III of the Cougars who would go onto finish with 93 yards and would pull them within 7-6 in the second quarter when he ran in from 2 yards out.

Steele Canyon would lead at the half 7-6 and in the second half would kick a field goal in the third quarter to lead 9-7 thanks to David Martines who booted a 32 yarder.

They would extend their lead in the fourth quarter when Jeremy Mendez-Gal found Antoine Walker for a 23-yard scoring strike which extended their lead.

Mendez-Gal on the night was able to guide the offense and throw for 116 yards including the late score.

Walker who was the recipient of the Mendez-Gal throw had himself quite the night as he picked off a pass along with blocked a field goal attempt.

Madison in the fourth quarter would make a comeback attempt and actually pull within five points as Daivieon White hauled in a pass from Springs.

With the victory, the Cougars show they are a real threat to anyone in their way move to 2-0 while the Warhawks drop to 1-1.
