LA MESA (10-25-19) – A week after scoring the most points on the season against Valhalla the Cougars came into Grossmont on senior night and completely dominated.

The most impressive feat in the game might have been the defensive dominance vs a usually high powered series especially looking back into the past years of the series.

The Foothillers were coming off of a tough loss against the Helix Highlanders where they struggled especially on defense. They tried to bounce back against Steele Canyon but the Cougars played a complete game on both sides of the ball.

Steele Canyon from start to finish played great as the first play of the game was a successful reverse pass trick play from wideout Chris Carter to Antoine Walker to make it 7-0. The Cougars suffocating defense on top of a Grossmont offense that was making a lot of mistakes all over wouldn’t allow the Hillers to get to the 50-yard line which was only accomplished once in which the end result was a 26-yard field goal by Axel Gonzalez.

This would allow Steele Canyon plenty of opportunity to put points on the board with a Chris Carter 39 yard TD, an Elia Kirismasi 10-yard scoring pass to Antoine Walker and a field goal would extend their lead to 24-3 at intermission.

Looking back at the previous games in the series it wasn’t crazy to think the Foothillers could make a possible comeback and pull off the win.

Unfortunately, the defense of the Cougars right out of the gate in the second half would not let Grossmont get into a groove. The defense was so suffocating that the Hillers were never able to get past the 35 nor pick up a first down in the second half. The offense would only muster a grand total of 23 yards in the second half.

Scoring for the Cougars was Wes Neely twice, Carter, Kirismasi, and Cameron Ewert who caught a pass from Kirismasi to finish out the scoring.

Steele Canyon finished with 514 total yards and the most points scored on the season which gives them huge momentum going into their showdown with Helix next week.

Grossmont arguably played their worst football of the season and possibly in a long time against their two best opponents.

They do have a contest against El Capitan next week in which they will be the favorites to pick up the pieces moving forward to the playoffs.

On the night for Steele Canyon, Kirismasi threw for 166 yards on 11 of 20 passing and 2 TDs and also ran for another score and 38 yards on 8 carries.

For Grossmont, Jaime Odom had a bad night with 9 of 23 for 86 yards and an INT and just 6 carries for 1 yard on the ground.

Leading the ground game for the Cougars was Neely who picked up 108 yards on 13 carries and Carter who ran for 66 yards on 6 carries, he also had 2 catches for 40 yards. Walker caught 2 catches for 100 yards.

The ground game for Grossmont was nonexistent but Robert Tucker did finish with 5 catches for 50 yards.
