The Wildcats of Brawley traveled inland to Spring Valley on Friday night as underdogs and nearly pulled off the victory over the Cougars a Division I opponent.

Unlike last year’s game which was played in hot temperatures, Friday night was a pretty cool evening. However, the WildCats from the Valley didn’t make things cool as they turned the heat up on their hosts.

Brawley started the game with a long drive that took more than six minutes and consisted of 68 yards to set up the 5-yard score by potential Silver pigskin finalist Casey Kline. The PAT was missed so the Wildcats led 6-0 early on.

Steele Canyon couldn’t get anything going on the offensive side of the ball and Brawley was able to take advantage of this as they had a huge time advantage in the first half 21:35 to 3:25.

In the second half, the Wildcats led 13-0 over the home teams Cougars which was pretty concerning. However, the Cougars finally got on the board to pull within 13-7 with a little over six minutes remaining on a touchdown by Nathan Barnett.

Still trailing the Cougars defense had to come up big and indeed they did as they were able to force a fumble with about five minutes remaining in the game.

Steele Canyon with the ball and a chance to pull out the victory from the jaws of defeat promptly moved the ball down the field and did so until they got to the 1-yard line where Barnett on fourth down kept it himself and smashed his way into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game to give the Cougars a 14-13 lead and bringing the Cougar faithful to their feet.

“Our defense kept up in the game and the offense figured it out with 6 minutes to play as we were able to make the plays necessary, Viliamu Morse and Cameron Ewert both played great on the defense.” Said Cougars head coach Scott Longerbone when asked about the game and also who shined in it.
