MATER DEI CATHOLIC 37, EL CAPITAN 35

In a repeat of last season between the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders and the El Capitan Vaqueros the contest was decided by a couple of points.

The game definitely gave all the fans in attendance something to cheer about but the Crusaders used a balanced night to pull out the victory.

Mater Dei Catholic’s special teams got busy right away as they were able to break through and block and El Capitan punt which set up their first score. Starting at the 8-yard line of the Vaqueros the Crusaders marched into the end zone as Jayden Flores caught a short one to make it 7-0.

The early score didn’t phase the Vaqueros as Yaphet Yokley responded with a 75-yard scamper score on the next play to tie the game at 7-7. Both teams would trade scoring blows and the Vaqueros would lead 14-7 after one period of play thanks to a Wick Hauser 5-yard score.

However that lead wouldn’t last as the Crusaders midway through the second quarter scored on a 75-yard play and a mishandled snap on a punt by the Vaqueros would lead to another score this time by Aiden Calvert to put the Crusaders up 21-14.

El Capitan was looking for answers and they got one when junior Donnie Green would score on a 27-yard catch and run from Hauser. Green for the Vaqueros was one of the big keys to staying in the game with the Crusaders as he amassed 209 total yards on the night.

With the game tied at 28-28 the Vaqueros, unfortunately, made another mistake with another mishandled snap which led to the Crusaders getting the ball back.

The turnover would be costly as Calvert would find his way into the end zone for a 6-yard score to put the Crusaders up 35-28.

The Crusaders later on a punt were able to pin the Vaqueros back at their own two-yard line in which the Vaqueros tried a screen pass but the Crusaders defense quickly sniffed it out and pounced in for the safety to go up 37-28.

So the Vaqueros knew they had to do something to try and keep their hopes alive. They would march down the field after receiving the kickoff and with 1:23 score on a 2-yard pass from Hauser to Ethan Burleson to pull within 37-35.

On the night for the Vaqueros, Hauser threw for two scores and Green ran for 182 yards of the Vaqueros 352 on the night.
