DI: Foothillers Look For Three-Peat After Rallying Past Eagles

LA MESA – The Grossmont Foothillers trailed late and would use a four-run fifth inning to procure the lead for good on Tuesday afternoon.

Early on the Granite Hills Eagles would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Brian Smith knocked in Ryan Fenn on a sacrifice fly, TK Parker would come into score when Grant Mac Arthur reached on an error.

The Foothillers would answer right back in the bottom of the first inning as their bats came alive.

With one out Danny Yanez would double in Brodie Romero, Justin Brown followed with a base hit to score Keoni Valdez to tie the game at 2-2, James Odom hit a ball that was misplayed allowing Yanez to score to give Grossmont the 3-2 lead.

Granite Hills later in the top of the third inning would retake the lead thanks to a ball that was misplayed allowing Fenn to score, Smith, followed with a  sacrifice fly to bring home Parker to make it 4-3.

The Eagles tacked on another run in the top of the fifth inning on a fielder’s choice allowing Parker to come home which made it 5-3.

But Grossmont rallied in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-run double by Yanez to left field which tied the game at 5-5, a couple of batters later Odom drove in Yanez with a base hit to center field, and Brandon Smith knocked in a run to give the Hillers a 7-5 lead.

The rest of the way the Hillers relief pitcher Jake Romero would shut down the Eagles and finish things off on a ground ball that was turned into a double play.

For the Eagles, Noa Ponciano took the loss in relief as he gave up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 1.

Romero picked up the win in relief for the Hillers finishing up the final 2.2 innings in which he gave up 0 runs while striking out 2.

The loss officially eliminates the Eagles and they finish the year with a 16-15 overall record.

For Grossmont, it will be the third consecutive trip to the CIF Division I Finals and they will be looking for the three-peat championship and fifth overall championship in the previous eight years.

They will take on the winner of Madison and Westview to be played tomorrow if weather permits. The finals will be held on Friday night at USD at 7 PM if weather permits.
