DIII: Golden Eagles Use Big Inning To Claim Victory And Advance To Ship






DEL CERRO – A late big inning by the San Pasqual Golden Eagles ignites their way to victory over the Patrick Henry Patriots on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles would strike first with a couple of runs in the top of the first inning starting with an RBI base hit by Josh Tuttle who knocked in Elijah Jackson who led off with a triple, later on in the inning, Parker Steadman knocked in Tuttle to make it 2-0.

Moving to the bottom of the fourth inning after not being able to get anything going the Patriots finally awoke on offense.

Leadoff hitter Jonathan Marshall started off reaching on an error, Max Shabestari singled, a couple of batters later Garrett McKee knocked in Marshall to make cut the Golden Eagles lead to 2-1, Ryan Miller followed with a hit to knock in Shabestari to tie the game at 2-2, Dante Juliano follows with a walk that scores Andrew McAlpin and with two outs Mateo Medina walks to bring home McKee to give the Patriots a 4-2 lead.

Patrick Henry threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning as they put runners on with less than two outs but couldn’t get anything.

San Pasqual in the top of the sixth inning trailing by two runs started off with a one-out walk to Steadman, but the next batter would be retired.

The Patriots looked like they were going to get out of the inning without any damage done but the wheels fell off as Jacoby Koser walked, Ben Lee, hits a ball that is misplayed allowing Steadman to score, Luke Hanson, knocks on the tying run, a couple of batters later the Golden Eagles take a 6-4 lead when Jackson singles in two runs.

Leading 6-4 the Golden Eagles weren’t done in the inning as Tuttle singled in a couple more runs to make it 8-4, Jason Hall singled in another run to round out the scoring. ‘

After going down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning the Patriots were down to their final at-bats in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With one out, McAlpin walked, McKee walks to advance McAlpin, Ryan Miller follows with a walk to load the bases and only one out.

Patrick Henry was in business with hope as they had the bases packed and only one out.

The next batter Juliano would hit a fly ball to right field for an out but McAlpin would tag up from this base and trot home for the run to make it 9-5. That would be the final score as the next batter would hit into a fielder’s choice.

Taking the loss for the Patriots was Max Jones who went 6 innings, giving up 9 runs on 9 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4 on the day.

For the Golden Eagles, Chase Reed would get the win in relief as he tossed 2.1 innings in which he gave up 1 run on 2 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3.

With the loss, the Patrick Henry Patriots are eliminated and finish the season at 23-8-1 while the San Pasqual Golden Eagles improve to 22-10 and will take on the Valhalla Norsemen in the CIF Championship game on Friday afternoon.

Even though the Patriots lost their future looks bright as it was only a season ago that they finished 10-17. This season they won the City League Championship and secured a #2 seed and advanced all the way to the Semifinals finishing with a win differential of 13 victories from last season.
