MIRA MESA – On Tuesday afternoon it was all Riley O’Sullivan as he shut down the top-seeded Mira Mesa Marauders and with a late run in the top of the seventh got the win.

The pitching on both sides was strong as each team went through each other inning by inning. The Marauders threatened in the bottom of the third inning as Ryan Fletcher roped a one-out double, he would be stranded as O’Sullivan struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Moving forward to the top of the seventh inning the Norsemen started on the right foot as Kyle Casper led off with a base hit, he would later be caught trying to steal home.

Valhalla was still in business as there were only one out and Trey Henige who got on base via a bunt fielder’s choice advanced to third base on defensive indifference, Ethan Dunnam lined a double to bring home Henige which made it 1-0.

The slim lead would hold up for Valhalla as O’Sullivan retired Mira Mesa in order 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning via two line outs and a ground ball out.

Jackson Betancourt for the Marauders took the loss as he gave up the 1 run on 3 hits in 7 innings of work in which he walked 1 and struck out 8.

For the Norsemen, O’Sullivan struck out 12 in his 7 innings of work for the complete game victory in which he walked 0.

For Valhalla, they improve to 23-8 and they will be taking one step closer in advancing to the championship game for the first time since 2014 when they lost to fellow East County Grossmont 6-4 in the Division I game and were coached by Mike Bando. Prior to that appearance, they were in the Division 2006 Division III game when led by Steve Perdue they defeated University of San Diego High School Dons coached by Gary Remiker by a score of 4-1, they were also in the Division II title game against El Capitan in 2004 in which the Steve Vickery led team beat them 8-2. The Norsemen that year were coached by Steve Perdue.

They will play Mira Mesa one more time for the right to play in the championship game.

Their latest title game appearance should they make it will be on Friday afternoon at 3:30 PM at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the campus of San Diego State University and they will take on the San Pasqual Golden Eagles if weather permits.
