DIVISION I PLAYOFFS: PONCIANO & HOGAN PROVIDE STRONG OUTING TO PROPEL EAGLES

SAN DIEGO – Strong pitching from the Eagles along with a late run powered them to victory on Saturday.

Both Noa Ponciano who got the starting nod and Eric Hogan combined to pitch a string game for the Granite Hills Eagles (16-14) holding the Saint Augustine Saints (18-14-1) offense to zero runs despite allowing six hits.

Saints was also dutifully up to the task as they didn’t allow the Eagles anything despite giving up six hits on the day.

The Eagles would finally in the top of the sixth inning put together some offense starting with Clay Fordham who led off with a single, he would advance to second on a sacrifice, a couple of batters later with two outs Dillon Goins lined a ball to left field for a double and brought home Fordham for a 1-0 lead.

Saint Augustine finally threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning starting with a leadoff single by Cole Bertsche, a couple of batters later with one out JT Penick singled which advanced Bertsche to third base.

With runners on first and the tying run on third base up stepped Xavier Franco who Hogan was able to get out on a fly ball to right field that wasn’t deep enough to bring home Bertsche, the next batter Ariel Armas flew out to right field where Goins squeezed it for the third and final out of the game.

Taking the loss for the Saints was Bertsche who lasted 2 innings in which he gave up 1 run on 3 hits.

For Granite Hills, Ponciano picked up the win as he went 4 innings in which he gave up 0 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.

Hogan picked up the save as he tossed 3 innings of relief for the Eagles in which he gave up 0 runs on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3.

The loss by the Saints officially eliminates them from the playoffs while the Eagles move on to travel and play their league rival Grossmont on Tuesday the 21st at 3:30 PM.
