LA MESA – The Grossmont Foothillers (19-12) used a two-run first inning and strong pitching on Saturday morning to propel themselves to victory in an elimination game.

Having already played twice in league with Grossmont winning both meetings the Steele Canyon Cougars (14-16) looked to reverse the previous results but unfortunately, the bats were limited to 4 four hits on the day.

After shutting the Cougars lineup down in the top of the first inning the Foothillers started their half of the first inning with a double by Aly Allmann (2-3, R, RBI, 2B), she would come into score when Katalina Contreras (1-1, R, 2 RBI, HR) blasted her tenth home run of the season over the left field fence.

The home run by Contreras gave the Foothillers a 2-0 lead early on.

Steele Canyon would put two runners on in the top of the third inning as Marley Rimoldi (1-2) led off with a base hit and later Bianca Morales with two outs was hit by a pitch. Neither would advance any further.

Grossmont would add their third run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Allmann came through again with a base hit to score Brianne Blue (1-3, R, 2B) which made it 3-0.

The Cougars in the top of the fifth inning would get a two-out double by JJ Venzor but the next batter would be retired.

Moving to the top of the seventh inning the Cougars knew they had to get something going and they started off right as Tayler Thomas (2-3, 2B) smashed a double to center field, later with two outs Mariah Mata walked to put runners at first and second.

Steele Canyon with runners at first and second and two outs had the person they wanted coming to bat in JJ Venzor (1-3, 2B). She was able to work the count to 1-1 against Samaria Roope before she hit a ground ball to third base where it was fielded by Issy Cervantes who threw it to first base for the final out of the game.

Taking the loss for the Cougars was Grace Richter who went 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs while walking 4 and striking out 6.

For Grossmont, Roope went the full 7 innings giving up 0 runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5 to pick up the win.

The loss by the Cougars officially eliminates them from the playoffs while the Foothillers will play Tuesday, May 21 at 3:30 PM at home against Rancho Buena Vista.
