The Eagles led by Kellan Cobbs who is in his 6th season always play a tough non-league schedule to start out and this year is no different as they hosted the Poway Titans from the North County on Friday night.

Both squads were looking to get the 2018 season going in the right direction as each wanted to stake a claim right away. The Titans coming off a 3-8 record wanted to show that last season was a mirage while the Eagles come off a 10-3 record and want to show they are still a contender.

Both teams went at it in the first quarter and as the defenses held each other in check the Eagles finally were able to break through late in the first as Chris Ostreng who took over the starting duties for the graduating Jacob Siegfried found Jacob Setterberg for a 56-yard touchdown pass to give them a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles would extend their lead to 10-0 on a field goal in the early stages of the second quarter. However later on the Titans finally were able to garner some offense as they marched down the field and eventually punched it in courtesy of a 1-yard score by Justin Kramer to cut into the Eagles lead 10-7.

However, the Eagles answered back with another score in the third quarter to go up 17-7 thanks to a Kole Brown 5-yard touchdown reception as Ostreng was able to scramble around and find him for the score. Neither team scored the rest of the third quarter.

Poway in the fourth quarter was able to cut into the Eagles lead once again as Maximus Brown found Noah Araujo for a 4-yard reception to make it 17-13.

Clinging to the four-point advantage the Eagles couldn’t tack on any more points and the Titans tried to make a comeback and actually had a shot to do so and win the game as they had one last shot. However, the Hail Mary try was thwarted due to a penalty flag that was thrown. The Titans were called for a 10-yarder and they tried again and another flag was thrown and once again the ball was moved another 10 yards back. So on the third try Brown went back and threw the ball into the end zone but the ball was intercepted by Granites Dylan Rutter to give the Eagles the victory.
