Back and forth both the Maranatha Christian Eagles and the Santana Sultans went like a merry-go-round but in the end, the Eagles were able to hold off a late rally to secure the victory.

Things started off rocky for the Eagles in the first quarter as they fell behind 3-0 but they would score the next seven points to lead 7-3. The Sultans would retake the lead 8-7 as Carson Burton banged in a three-ball and Desmond Williams would follow with a steal and an easy layup for two points.

The Eagles were not fazed by this and would go on another run of 8-0 to retake the lead 19-12 and would eventually stretch it out to 24-15 at the end of the first period. Leading the charge for the Eagles in the first period was Nate Salas who scored 7 points including a three-pointer.

Santana, however, would change the outcome in the second quarter as they would outscore the Eagles 17-14 behind both Jake Kelchner and Matt Hitchcock who paced the way with 4 points apiece. The Sultans would trail 38-32 at the break.

Trailing by six points to start the second half the Sultans made a couple of adjustments and were able to start off with a bang as they score the quarters first seven points to retake the lead 39-38. They would eventually lead 44-43 which led to both teams trading baskets. Burton would lead the Sultans with 9 points as he nailed three treys in the quarter which saw the Sultans outscore the Eagles 25-18 to lead 57-56 heading into the final period.

The final period would be a very intense one as both teams would go back and forth but Maranatha would lead for what they thought was semi-comfortable. Santana, on the other hand, had other ideas as they stormed back and with a little over a minute remaining Hitchcock would nail a three-pointer to bring the Sultans within 69-66. A few seconds later after a stop, they would tie the game at 69-69 on a Zach Miller three-pointer.

After a free throw by the Eagles which gave them a one-point lead, they would steal the ball and extend the lead 72-69.

With what looked like the last possession the Sultans missed their opportunity and the Eagles grabbed the rebound but the Sultans would force the jump ball but the possession was in the Eagles favor. Santana would actually get the ball back and Brandon Simmons would nail a three-pointer to bring the Sultans within 74-72.

For the Eagles in the victory, Sean Mangan corralled a double-double with a team-leading 26 points and 10 boards, Salas finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds while Matthew Brashear scored 10 points.

In the loss Burton finished with 18 points as he nailed six three-pointers, Hitchcock scored 14 points and Simmons had 13 points.

Maranatha on the night nailed 11 3-pointers including six in the first half.
