This past week has seen pretty much every team in San Diego play a scrimmage against another team or in some cases a three-way version. However to many in San Diego the official kickoff to the football season is the SDFNL Kick Off Classic.

This year’s version of the Classic featured games over both Friday and Saturday evenings and was used as a canned food drive for the San Diego Food Bank. In fact it was very successful in that aspect as it was said that enough food has been brought to feed close to 100 families.

The East County was featured in the final two games of the Classic with Mount Miguel taking on Christian and in the finale the El Capitan Vaqueros taking on the Eastlake Titans.

In the first to last game of the evening the Christian Patriots defeated the Mount Miguel Matadors 41-26 behind 5 touchdown strikes by Brad Jeremiah.

Jeremiah threw a short pass to Bryce Riepl who hauled it in and did the rest of the work making his way into the end zone for a 15-yard score.

Another touchdown for the Patriots came way of a Jesse Matthews 13-yard reception to give the Patriots a 21 point lead.

The big play of the night for the Patriots came when Alexander Gonzales scampered 93-yards to the end zone.

Mount Miguel had some big plays themselves as Shemar Greene showed his skills as he hauled in a 66-yard score that closed the deficit at 35-19 in the third quarter.

Greene also scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Mugabee Miller right at the half to make the score 28-13.

The Matadors pulled within striking distance in the fourth quarter as Santino Pacheco hauled in a 37-yard touchdown reception to bring the score to 35-26 in the fourth quarter.

In the evening finale the Eastlake Titans showed that they will be a much improved team from last season as they defeated El Capitan 41-7.

The Vaqueros scored their only points on a Wick Hauser 26 yard scamper.
