EASTCOUNTY PREP FOOTBALL D-1 AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

By Adam Paul

FOLSOM (16-0) 49, HELIX (13-2) 42

Helix who traveled by bus for 10+ hours all the way to Sacramento for their state championship game against Folsom who came in with a 15-0 record looked to bring back a state title for the first time since 2011.

Right away things looked good for the Highlanders as Robert hunter picked off a Folsom pass on the second play from scrimmage at the Folsom 17 and ran it back to the 4 yard line. Helix would punch it in three plays later as Isaiah Wooden took the ball and swept to the right side to find the house to make it 7-0

The highlanders would stop Folsom on the next possession and would extend their lead thanks to a long pass from Carson Baker to Wooden who had to leap for it and tip toe from going out and streak down the sideline for 73-yards and a 14-0 lead.

Folsom who came into the contest averaging about 48 points a contest didn’t panic as quarterback Kaiden Bennett put the Bulldogs on his shoulders and went from there.

Bennett a 6-foot 175lbs junior would find Elijhah Badger for a 70-yard connection that was called a top 10 type catch as Badger would escape away from Isaac Taylor-Stuart attempt to tackle him and speed down the field all the way to house for the score to make it 14-7.

Folsom would eventually build their lead at the half to 28-14 thanks to multiple touchdown strikes by Bennett and also a 32-yard scamper score.

So the Highlanders went into the intermission needing to regroup and indeed they did as they came out hot. They pulled within a score when Baker was able to connect with Rashaad Scott on a 47-yard strike to make it 28-21.

Unfortunately the Bulldogs were too much as the contest went back and forth between the two teams.

Folsom would score again to make it 35-21. Helix would answer as they drove down the field and would eventually score on a Stuart 8-yard run with :15 left in the third quarter.

With about 10 minutes left in the game Folsom again would score as Bennett found CJ Hutton on a 54-yard in stride touchdown to make it 42-28. The Highlanders wouldn’t go down without a fight though as Baker would do it again and find the house on a 8-yard run to pull within 42-35.

Again the Bulldogs would answer to push their lead to 49-35 with just under 3 minutes left in the game.

Helix was running out of options and time as the Bulldogs just kept answering each and everytime.

The Highlanders would receive the ball and Baker and company went to work. They would eventually score when Baker found Terrance Mcintyre for a 3-yard score to pull within 49-42 with just over a minute left in the game.

Unfortunately that would be the closest the Highlanders would get as Parker Clayton would recover the attempted onside kick to end the game.

On the night both teams accounted for over 1,000 yards of total offense with Helix gaining 495 yards and Folsom gaining 543.

Baker would pass for 322 yards on 19 of 31 passing and 3 TDs. He would also have a rushing touchdown.

Wooden tallied 172 yards while hauling in 7 balls and Elelyon Noa on the ground rushed for 124 yards on 28 carries.

For the Bulldogs, Bennett tallied 327 yards passing and 4 TDs and 147 yards on the ground and scored 2 TDs.

With the victory the Bulldogs have now claimed three state titles while the Highlanders record falls to 1-1.
