La Mesa – The Steele Canyon Cougars looked to pull off the big win against the Grossmont Foothillers who came into the contest on a roll the previous three games. Grossmont came in on a three game winning streak and also scored 50 points in each game.

Steele Canyon looked to use ball control to try and neutralize the high scoring offense of Grossmont and it worked early on as they were able to maintain a couple of long drives. Things looked good early on for the Cougars as Thomas Fishburne worked his magic with a touchdown strike to Valon Martinez.

However the early magic wouldn’t last as the defense for Grossmont was finally able to make a play as Zach Jones picked off Fishburne and raced to the house but he was tackled before scoring. Grossmont now had excellent field position and they would score as Thomas Magnum took the handoff from Jamie Odom and ran it in for the score. With their earlier score they now led 14-7 which would be the result after a quarter of play.

The Cougars went back to the well in the second quarter as they again had a long drive to start the quarter. They would capitalize on the long drive with a Fishburne score. Unfortunately the defense for the Foothillers woke up and got into the game again as Noah Cress would pick off Fishburne in the end zone. Another turnover occurred when Cooper Zoellner picked up the loose ball from Fishburne.

The offense for Grossmont in the second quarter revved things up as Shevell Sterling Jr. made it all about the run game in the quarter as he shaked and baked his way to touchdown runs of 14, 14 and 11 yards to make it 34-14 at intermission.

The defense for the Foothillers again came up big in the second half as Jones once again picked off Fishburne but this time he was able to race all the way to the house for the score and make it 44-14.

With the victory the Hillers now have won four in a row.
