Last season the Grossmont Foothillers made a run to a record of 8-0 before running into Helix and losing their first game. They shook that loss off and in the playoffs made another run before losing in one of the best playoff games last season 49-48 to Mission Hills that was decided in the final minute.

This year’s version of the Foothillers will look differently as star quarterback Hunter Gaines who threw for over 5,100 yards and 58 TDs in 2 seasons graduated and also star wideout Dominique Guevara who had 1,166 yards receiving and 16 touchdown catches graduated as well.

Head Coach Tom Karlo (40-18) who is entering his 6th season at the helm of the Foothillers will definitely be up to the challenge to reload his squad and have them competing at a high level.

The quarterback position will be a battle between Dylan Smith and Jamie Odom who will vye to replace Gaines. Either way the quarterback position will be up to the challenge as they get the best preparation from the system at Grossmont.

Running back Shevell Sterling returns after rushing for 787 yards and 6 touchdowns. At the receiving position will be Josh Moala who caught 30 balls for 316 yards and 2 scores and also Zach Jones who grabbed 18 catches for 257 yards and 2 scores.

The defense returns Joe Williams who last season had 54 tackles and 4 sacks, Andrew Lira who amassed 77 tackles and 3 interceptions are both returning All-Leaguers who will be joined by other talented returning starters who are all expected to play major roles this season.

The Grossmont Foothillers hope to have a lot of success offensively this year like last year as they averaged about forty points a contest and 435 yards as they played the aggressive up-tempo offense. With this style of offense last season they outscored their opponents 426-194.

Scheduling wise the Foothillers play their first five games at home and will be tested right off the bat as they host the Bishops Knights and their cast of stars. After the first game they play Olympian, Hilltop, Eastlake and finish the month of September against Buena Park. League wise they open with El Capitan on the road and Valhalla on the road. The month of October concludes with home games against Steele Canyon and on October 27th they will face rival Helix in the game for the Musket. The Foothillers will look to defeat the Highlanders for the first time since 1991 when current head coach Tom Karlo led the Foothillers to victory. Following the rivalry game the Foothillers will finish off the regular season on the road against West Hills November 3rd.

Grossmont will look to be in the Open Division of the San Diego CIF playoffs like last season or they will be in Division I where they will try and make it to the Championship game and win their first San Diego CIF Championship which both haven’t occurred since 1971.
