CIF DIVISION I PLAYOFFS FIRST ROUND

#5 GROSSMONT 34, #12 SAN MARCOS 20

LA MESA (11-8-19) – In front of a packed house and in what promised to be a great game the Grossmont Foothillers were looking for a measure of revenge against the San Marcos Knights. The last time these two teams met last season the Knights bested the Foothillers 32-21 in a come from behind victory.

This time, the Foothillers would get revenge at home which started with Jaime Odom finding the house from 5-yards out for his 12th of the season to make it 7-0. This would come after a San Marcos fumble that Grossmont would recover.

San Marcos would come right back and answer with a Kaden Vohnout 7-yard touchdown but would miss the extra point making it 7-6 with about a minute remaining in the first quarter. After a fumble by Grossmont, San Marcos would take advantage and actually take the lead 13-7 on another score by Vohnout.

The Knights would lead by six points after one-quarter of play.

Grossmont would turn the ball over in the second quarter when Odom threw an interception but the Knights couldn’t capitalize as they missed a field goal after driving deep into Hiller territory.

The missed opportunity by the Knights breathed life into the Foothillers as they would take advantage as Odom once again used his legs and would find the house to retake the lead. They would extend their lead right before halftime when Odom found Brody Schicker on a 22-yard connection to give them a 20-13 lead.

San Marcos in the second half would start off by marching and tying the score on a 27-yard passing touchdown. Grossmont would answer with another score as Robert Tucker took the handoff and burned the Knights defense to the tune of a 47-yard touchdown to make it 27-20.

In the beginning of the fourth quarter, Chris Alba would rumble and carry Knights into the end zone for his first touchdown of the year extending the lead to 34-20 with a 3-yard run.

The Knights would try and make a comeback but interceptions from Matt Diaz and Austin Wittmeyer for Grossmont would shut the door on any ideas the Knights had of pulling out any win.

For the Hillers, Odom finished the night passing for 150 yards on 13-24 with a touchdown and an interception. He would also rush for 96-yards on 12 carries and 2 touchdowns.

After being out for the game against El Capitan, Tucker for the Foothillers would make his mark with a big night as he ran for 140 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown along with 3 receptions for 48 yards.

Brody Schicker led all receivers for Grossmont as he hauled in 5 catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Grossmont now moves on to the Quarterfinals where they travel to face Madison in the stadium where last season’s crazy upset win took place.
