GOLD-SILVER ROUNDUP: HELIX CRUISES WHILE MARINERS SINK PATRIOTS

On Monday the Highlanders pounded out 12 hits and exploded early in the top of the first inning en route to a convincing victory over the Vikings.

Helix started rolling in the top of the first inning as Avery Perez (1-3, 2R, 2 SB) stole third base after leading off with a walk, she would score on a misplayed ball by the Vikings to make it 1-0, Sophia Ramuno (1-3, 2R, 2 RBI, 2B) followed with a smash double which allowed both Erin Brown (2-4, R, RBI, 2 SB) and Isabella Bordine (1-4, R, RBI, 2B) to come into score to extend the lead to 3-0. They would tack on a couple more runs thanks to a double by Zoe Kuhlken (1-1, R, 2 RBI, 2B, SB) and single by Casey Castro (2-3, 2R, 2 RBI) to make it 6-0. Scoring in the inning was Nicole Hernandez who also stole second base.

The Highlanders added another run in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Camryn Jonilonis. They would go onto add a couple more in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a Castro RBI single and a Melissa Gutierrez (1-1, 2 RBI) single which made it 10-0.

The bats for the Highlanders were not done as they would tack on their final runs in the top of the fifth inning. Both runs would score on ground ball outs.

Castro not only did damage at the plate but she came into toss the final couple of innings in relief. She would retire the Vikings in order in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game.

For the Highlanders, three pitchers would toss innings in the blowout victory.

Romuno started the contest in which she went 2 1/3 innings giving up 1 hit while walking 2 and fanning 4. She also garnered the victory on the day. Perez came in and tossed 2/3 of an inning in which she didn’t allow a single hit while striking out 2 and Castro fanned 3 in her 2 innings of work.

 

MAR VISTA 21, CHRISTIAN 2

It just wasn’t the day for the Christian Patriots as the Mariners of Mar Vista took advantage of every opportunity to win convincingly.

The Mariners struck first in the top of the first inning as they were able to push across three runs to lead 3-0.

The Patriots knew they were in for a fight and they were able to do some damage of their own as Mallory Steele (2-3, R, 2B) led off with a double, Audrey Shebloski (1-3, R, RBI, 2B) followed that with a lined ball hit to center field for a double which brought home Steele to make it 3-1, Devyn Krystek (1-2, RBI) followed with a base hit which brought home Shebloski to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Mar Vista would really do damage as they made sure that the Patriots wouldn’t be able to make any type of comeback as they scored 18 runs combined in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Also contributing for the Patriots on the day was Kate Manes who went 2-2.
