CIF DIVISION III

UNIVERSITY CITY 47, EL CAPITAN 30

Coming off a disappointing regular season the Centurions took their home field advantage and made it their own to showcase their high flying offense against the visiting El Capitan Vaqueros.

Quarterback Gunnar Gray threw for four touchdown passes and also 275 yards including two to Casey Granfors. The ground game was also solid for the Centurions as Jimmy Galindo ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns.

Galindo was able to ice the game with a little over a minute and a half as he found his way to the house on a 34-yard run.

The Vaqueros who were missing top receiver Yaphet Yokley were led by Wick Hauser who threw for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for a couple more.

Trailing in the second quarter, Hauser was able to tie the game with a 23-yard score. But a 66-yard Gray touchdown pass would put the Centurions in the lead which they wouldn’t relinquish.

University City would lead 21-7 at the intermission.

Another bright spot for the Vaqueros was Taylor Grasmick who ran for over 100 yards on the night. He would end up racking up 126 yards on 16 carries and one of his runs was a big 61-yard scamper.

With the victory the Centurions next week will have a rematch with #1 seed Christian whom they lost to 49-28 in the season finale.

El Capitan (3-8) has not won a playoff contest since their magical season in 2014 which saw them advance to the Division III State title contest after claiming the Division II CIF San Diego Section Championship. They also return quite a bit of players next year which will bode well as the Vaqueros will be a consideration for contention.
