LA MESA (9-13-19) – Going into the bye, Grossmont had a CIF record for total offense and their next opponent Olympian had just come off a lopsided loss to Poway and looked like a good team but not a team that would upset #9 Grossmont.

After the bye week, Grossmont wouldn’t hold the CIF record anymore as Bishop’s had set a new record and Olympian almost upset #8 Torrey Pines. The Foothillers knew they couldn’t take Olympian lightly and despite being down at the half would use a rushing attack of Robert Tucker to run away with the contest.

In the first half, Grossmont wasn’t clicking on offense with a couple of early INT’s, penalties and dropped balls that plagued them the entire first half on offense. The Hillers would only manage 10 points in the first half after scoring 28 points against Mater Dei Catholic.

Defensively the Hillers were led by linebacker Chris Alba who kept them in the game by terrorizing the offense of Olympian and holding them to 14 points in the first half.

The lack of points scored by Eagles in the first half would allow the Foothillers to make the necessary adjustments which they did for the second half. In the second half, the Foothillers used their deadly balanced offense to score 42 points and put up 648 yards of total offense in the game.

The 648 yards of total offense ranks 18th in CIF history. The offensive explosion allowed Tucker to have one of his best games ever in his career and a real breakout game in not only East County but in San Diego County with 260 yards rushing and 111 yards receiving and scoring 6 of Grossmont’s 7 touchdowns on the night. He would have 3 rushing and 3 receiving.

The other touchdown came when Jaime Odom ran it in from 30-yards out. He would have a normal productive evening as he passed for 275 yards on 17-of-31 passing and throw 3 scores and 2 INTs and run for 103 yards on 14 carries.

His passing night also would procure him into the 5,000 yards passing club and make him the third Grossmont quarterback to do so this decade. Only one other team other than Grossmont has such as a player with such accomplishment.

Odom’s main targets on the night were Chis Chrzan who caught 5 passes for 101 yards and Brody Schicker who caught 3 balls for 60 yards.

Another big milestone with the win by Grossmont was the fact that with the victory head football coach Tom Karlo joined the 100 win club. He is the 42nd coach to achieve this milestone.

Grossmont improves to 3-0 and next week will take on a Division 6 opponent in Valley View who is 1-3.
