THE Helix Highlanders on the day used three long balls in their victory over the visiting Santana Sultans (7-8 Overall, 2-3 GHL) to claim a crucial Hills League contest on Tuesday afternoon.

Helix (9-6 Overall, 4-1 GHL) would take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of Eric Smelko who jacked a solo home run on a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence off of Sultans starter Ben Hart.

They would go onto extend their lead in the bottom of the second inning with three more runs as Noah Lane tagged Hart for another dinger, this time a two-run blast which also scored Adam Martinez who led off with a base hit.

Helix would add a fourth run when Devin Baker was called safe at home on a fielders choice.

Santana thought they had something in the top of the third inning as they trailed 4-0 with Brandon Glowacki leading off with a base hit, Tyler Glowacki followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Unfortunately, that would be the farthest they would get.

The Sultans would finally score in the top of the fourth inning when Dean Landers drove in Tyler Fitzgerald who previously doubled to make it 4-1.

Whatever momentum the Sultans thought they had went away in the bottom of the fifth inning when Carlos Oquita hammered a two-run blast over the center field fence to bring home Jordon Thompson. The blast by Oquita was the third dinger on the day for the Highlanders.

Santana would not go down without one more push as Landers in the top of the sixth inning knocked in Fitzgerald on a ground ball out to make it 6-2.

Still with two outs both Glowacki brothers gave the Sultans some hope as Brandon Glowacki followed with a double and Tyler Glowacki singled to advance Brandon to third.

Christopher Paruleski came into relieve Thompson and retired the Sultans in order to preserve the victory.
