The Grossmont Foothillers (2-4) had one goal this week as they started league play. That goal was to bounce back and make a comeback after starting a disappointing 1-4 and to win the Grossmont Hills League.

Tonight was a first good step in that direction towards accomplishing that goal with a dominating victory over the Valhalla Norsemen (0-6).

The Hillers started off with the ball and the fireworks blazed quickly as Jamie Odom found Brody Schicker for the 49-yard score to cap off the solid first drive for Grossmont.

Valhalla looked to put something together and answer the score but on the third play of the drive Foothillers corner, Will Turner would pick off Luke Pillsbury’s pass. Once again the Foothillers offense had the ball and once again it wouldn’t take them long to score as Damari Crawford would haul in a 5-yard score 4 plays later.

With all the momentum in their favor, the Hillers didn’t stop as once again the defense came up big and forced a fumble and recovered it. The offense again moved down the field and again Odom was able to extend the lead as he threw an 8-yard strike to Desmond Carter to make it 21-0.

The next drive for Valhalla would stall and they would be forced to punt. However, the drive would stall at the Valhalla 7-yard line for Grossmont and they would have to settle for a 25-yard field by Axel Gonzalez which extended the lead 24-0.

Grossmont would get the ball back after the defense stymied Valhalla and forcing them to punt. They would score again as Thomas Magnum found his way on a reverse to the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown to make it 31-0 after one quarter of play.

With 7:27 remaining in the first half and leading 31-0 the Foothillers extended their lead when Odom threw a 9-yard touchdown to Shawn Williams to make it 38-0.

Now leading by a wide margin, Coach Karlo would start to rotate in the 2’s and 3’s for the rest of the first half and continue to do so in the second half.

Grossmont would score one more time in the first half when Dominic Espino was able to find Schicker for an 18-yard score to give the Hillers a 45-0 lead at intermission.

Valhalla would finally get on the board in the third quarter to avoid being shutout as Pillsbury hit Kiare Worthy on a screen pass to which he hauled in and did the rest as he zipped his way to end zone for the score and also the first touchdown for the Norsemen in a couple of games.

However the celebration didn’t last long as on the ensuing kickoff, Magnum was able to work his magic as he would streak his way to the house untouched for the score.

On the night the Norsemen finished with 103 total yards including 25 in the first half.

Odom on the other side for the Foothillers threw 4 touchdowns and 229 yards on 14-of-29 passing. His target Schicker hauled in 3 balls for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Next week the Foothillers will take on the undefeated Granite Hills Eagles in what will be the East County Game of The Week while Valhalla will look to get its first win against an always difficult Helix squad.
