LA JOLLA – In a rematch of last year when the Knights traveled to Spring Valley and behind Mozes Mooney and Jeffrey Jackson defeated the Monarchs 51-28. This year the Monarchs traveled to the Knights and garnered a little payback for last years game as they grounded and pounded the Knights.

Interestingly enough Jahmon McClendon who earlier in the week switched his college commitment from rhe red and black of the San Diego State Aztecs to the UCLA Bruins would sit out the first couple series of the contest. However that didn’t matter as Elshaddai Levi would provide the first score for the Monarchs on a 25-yard run to make it 7-0. The rest of the first quarter was a back and forth affair which would see Monte Vista lead by the one score.

With the Monarchs still clinging to the seven point lead the Knights finally were able to get on the board in the second quarter as Clay Petry found Champ Johnson on a 4th and goal reverse with 7:38 remaining to knot the score 7-7.

The tie score wouldn’t last as the Monarchs would drive down the field in which McClendon rushed for 75 yards and score on a 3-yarder to make it 14-7.

Bishops wasn’t deterred by the big running back and the fact that he was just getting started. They were able to move down the field and Dominic Haley would find Clarence Freeman for a spectacular catch in the end zone but the extra point was blocked. With 2:00 remaining the first half the Monarch led 14-13.

Bishops would recover a Monte Vista fumble on the kickoff and take advantage as they drive down and score four plays later but the 2-pt conversion was no good. Bishop’s now led 19-14 with :56 remaining in the second quarter.

The Knights would lead at the break 19-14.

In the second half the ground game for the Monarchs would take over as McClendon with 8:23 in the third quarter would take the handoff and score from 16-yards out to give Monte Vista a 21-19 lead.

Bishop’s would again regain the lead as Champ Johnson hauled in a 33-yard pass for the score.

With 3:33 remaining the quarter, McClendon would respond as he busted his way through the line and past the defenders to the house for a 59-yard scamper to put the Monarchs back on top 28-26. They would again threaten as they were able to move all the way down to the red zone. Bishop’s wouldn’t make it easy and actually forced a fourth down situation. The Monarchs would score again on a fake to McClendon to extend the lead 35-26.

The defense for the Monarchs again came up huge and would get the ball back for the offense. Once again it was McClendon who rumbled through the line and broke free for a 63-yard run which would put him over 200 yards on the night.

Monte Vista again would force a Knights turnover as they picked off a pass and give the ball back into the hands of McClendon who would score his third touchdown of the night.

On the night the recent UCLA commit would wind up with 349 yards on 31 carries and 4 touchdowns.

On the other side for the Knights, Haley would pass for 199 yards with 2 touchdowns, a rushing touchdown along with 65 yards.
