FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 68, MONTE VISTA 60

With both teams in Division IV the contest between the Foothills Christian Knights (6-0) and the Monte Vista Monarchs (2-1) was a pretty important one for playoff implications and it would be the duo of Ellie Turk and Aranxta Fonseca leading the scoring towards the victory.

The Knights came into the contest undefeated while the Monarchs themselves came in undefeated as well.

Both teams in the first period scrapped it out and would eventually come out even at 13-13 after the first period. Things in the second period went a little in the Knights favor as they were able to grind out a 20-13 advantage to take a 33-26 lead at the break.

Another grind in the third quarter as the Knights would outscore the Monarchs 14-13 to push their lead to double digits 50-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

Turk a junior for the Knights who in the preseason earned quite the recognition from San Diego County Hoops Report as one of the top players didn’t disappoint as she canned 6 3-pointers on the night and dished out 8 assists, grabbed 8 rebounds and had 6 steals and 5 blocks to go with her team-leading 29 points. Her teammate Fonseca cashed in 17 points and had 3 assists to go with her 6 boards and 5 blocks. Also contributing on the boards for the Knights were Emyrose Ancho and Faith Wilson who each grabbed 6 boards.

Overall the Knights grabbed 27 boards, dished out 14 assists and had 17 steals. They would need everything as the Monarchs despite being down by double digits wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Monte Vista down by 11 points heading into the fourth quarter used the Knights foul troubles to get back into the game.  They would actually tie the quarter 21-21 but in the end, it wasn’t enough as the Knights used Turk’s 21 points scored over the final 8:30 minutes of the contest and their defense and rebounding prowess to keep the scoreboard in their favor.
