SANTEE – Going back through the archives and not being able to find an answer, well it would seem it would be the very first time in a long time that the Helix Highlanders (13-9) beat the Santana Sultans (10-6) as they did on Wednesday afternoon.

The Highlanders came into the game with a little momentum as they had beaten a good Mar Vista squad a couple of days prior and now set their sights on the Santana Sultans who came into the contest a highly ranked Division I team.

After a lead single by Avery Perez (2-4, R, SB) to start things off both Erin Brown (R, SB) and Nicole Hernandez (2-3, R) drew consecutive walks to load the bases, a couple of batters later Sophia Ramuno (3-3, RBI) would give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead with a lined single to right field that scored Brown.

Despite giving up a one-out walk, Zoe Kuhlken (RBI) who got the starting nod for Helix was able to get out of the inning on a nice throw out at third base.

Leading 2-0 in the top of the third inning the Highlanders would add another run in the inning courtesy of a Kulhken groundout to first base that allowed Hernandez to race home.

The Sultans who had been stifled so far finally put together some momentum in the bottom of the fourth inning. It started with a leadoff walk to Hailey Justice (RUN), Lakaila Aquiningoc-David (2-3) singled, both runners would advance on a ground ball out, Justice would eventually score to make it 3-1.

Helix would answer right back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. They would add another run in the top of the seventh inning when Kori Jonilonis knocked in Casey Castro.

For the Sultans, Joey Barkhimer took the loss in which she gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in her 7 innings of work, she also walked 5 and struck out 6.

Kuhlken picked up the victory going the distance in which she limited the Sultans to 2 hits on the day along with the 1 run, she also walked 3 and struck out 1.
