LA MESA (9-28-19) – Coming into the contest the Grossmont Foothillers were ranked #6 in the latest U-T Poll, and with an offense that has been firing on all cylinders it would look like it was business as usual against Madison who was going to be their best competition by far to date in the non-league schedule.

Unfortunately, the Foothillers ran into a roadblock known as the Warhawks defense who made the Hillers offense who over the previous 4 weeks looked almost unstoppable look pedestrian on the night as they forced a lot of mistakes and also non-taking advantage of opportunities given.

Those opportunities included 2 fourth and ones within the 5-yard line not converted in the first half, 3 fumbles in the second half and one that was recovered by Grossmont but gave them a 4th down instead of a first down. All night the Foothillers constantly shot themselves in the foot on offense and Madison would use these to their advantage.

Grossmont would, however, take a 3-0 lead when Axel Gonzalez booted a FG on the first drive after Madison would have a long drive that would end up with nothing. After that, even with a blocked punt giving them great field position, Grossmont would turn the ball over 2 straight times on turnover on downs within their 5 as the Warhawks would score the only touchdown of the first half on a Jaylen Thomas to Herman Smith connection to make it 6-3.

Thigs for the Foothillers didn’t start off very well to start the second half as they fumbled the ball away and Madison would extend their lead to 10 with another Jaylen Thomas TD this time to star RB Keonte Springs for 34-yards.

Another forced punt for Grossmont gave the Warhawks the ball back but they would fumble the ball back and this time the Foothillers answered as Jamie Odom scored on an 11-yard TD.

Madison answered right back as Thomas found his way to the house from 33-yards out to make it 19-10 heading into the fourth quarter. Grossmont would eventually pull within a score when Gonzalez connected on a 42-yard FG to make it 19-13.

Another score by the Warhawks would extend their lead thanks to Springs. After 2 straight Grossmont fumbles and a Javhi Blomquist 23-yard score the game would get out of reach for the Hillers.

Offensively it was an off night for Odom as he finished with only 139 yards on 17-36 passing while rushing for 135 yards on 10 carries. Robert Tucker for the Hillers despite only 13 points had a pretty decent night with 84 yards on 14 carries.

Receiving wise it was Brody Schicker who led 6 catches for 51 yards.

Madison also exacts revenge on Grossmont as it was the Foothillers who eliminated them from the playoffs last season in an exciting game that included a power outage.

Next up the Foothillers move into the challenging part Grossmont Hills League starting off with Valhalla who is 3-2 before facing the likely hardest 3 opponents all in a row, going to Granite Hills, then hosting Helix in the Musket game and Steele Canyon.
