MATADORS OVERCOME OBSTACLES TO ADVANCE

EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL – SAN DIEGO CIF DIVISION III FIRST ROUND

By Adam Paul

ESCONDIDO – It was a grind up in the North County for the Mount Miguel Matadors. They had to overcome various penalties and even injuries to survive in their 27-18 victory.

If the Matadors were to continue their ride in the playoffs than someone was going to have to step up and that someone was running back Shemar Greene who decided to take things into his own hands.

Greene picked up the Matadors and carried them on his back in the second half as he ran for 113 yards on 20 carries. On the night he tallied 146 yards on 30 carries.

All night long the Matadors were slowed by penalties. On the night they were penalized 13 times for an astounding 131 yards. However despite the sloppiness it was the defense that would help pick up the slack.

Defensively the Matadors were led by Alex Lemon and Craig Jackson who helped spur on the defense.

The offense led by Greene would finally put the game away in the fourth quarter with about 3:45 left with his third touchdown of the evening.

With the win the Matadors earned their first playoff victory since 2012. They also will travel next week again but this time down to the dessert to take on #1 seeded Southwest-El Centro who is 10-0 in a quarterfinal game.

SCORE: #9 Mount Miguel 27, #8 Escondido 18

RECORDS: Mount Miguel (5-6), Escondido (4-7)
