SPRING VALLEY (9-20-19) – In a game that both teams needed being in the same Division things early on looked to go the Valhalla Norsemen’s way as they jumped out to an early 14-0 lead.

The first score of the game for Valhalla came when Hussain Bakr rumbled his way through the Matador defense for 58-yards and a 7-0 lead. The defense of Valhalla would step up and force Mount Miguel into a turnover on downs.

Valhalla would move the ball with ease as they marched an entire 80-yards that would see Raymond Sanchez cap the drive with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone and a two-score lead.

The two-score lead would move into the second quarter for the Norsemen as they were having their way. However, the Matadors luck would change as JD Laverdiere found Jaheim Allen-Pompey on a 49-yard pass for a touchdown and cut the deficit in half 14-7 only a couple of minutes into the quarter.

Just like Valhalla, the Matadors were able to garner the big defensive stop and turn that momentum into points thanks to Laverdiere who once again hit Allen-Pompey on a 45-yard score to pull within 14-13.

Mount Miguel turned the tables in the second half as they took the momentum and turned it into their first lead 19-14 thanks to Laverdiere who found the house from 5-yards out.

The lead for the Matadors didn’t last long as Baker took the handoff and zipped his way through defenders all the way home and 70-yards to retake the lead 21-19.

Mount Miguel would eventually take advantage of a Valhalla special teams mistake and again retake the lead 25-21. They would extend it even further as Ruben Hernandez scored with under a minute left in the quarter to make it 32-21.

After another score by Mount Miguel, the Norsemen would answer as Baker punched what ended up being the final score into the end zone from 7-yards out.

The Matadors came away with the big victory as Laverdiere accounted for 7 touchdowns and 329 yards passing.

On the other side for Valhalla, Baker would finish with almost 200 yards on the evening in the loss.
