SPRING VALLEY — The Monte Vista Monarchs enjoyed their 2017 Homecoming game when they defeated their cross-town rival Mount Miguel Matadors 35-0.

“We practiced very well all week,” Junior running back Jahmon McClendon after the shutout.  The junior racked up 168 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns in only the middle two quarters.

Also joining in on the rushing attack for the Monarchs (3-3, 1-0 GVL) was Tyrell Kyle who carried the load in the first quarter had five carries for 71 yards including a long 56-yard scoring stroll.

Not much love is ever given to the kickers, but Monte Vista’s Jason Hernandez had a rough start to the night as he missed his first extra point.  He used that as motivation the rest of the night as kicked field goals of 25 and 42-yards.  The longer of the two was with less than five seconds remaining in the first half.

Mount Miguel (2-5, 0-1 GVL) had a tough time on this first Friday in October.  They ended the night with just 44 yards of total offense.  They were also victimized by getting a bad snap and a safety in the first half.

Next week the Matadors will look to get back to .500 in league when they travel to El Cajon Valley (1-5) when the Braves open league play.  Monte Vista will stay home on the friendly turf and host the Sultans (3-4, 0-1 GVL).
