LA JOLLA – The last time the Monte Vista Monarchs and the University City Centurions met the Centurions prevailed 27-15 in the second week of the season. A lot had happened with both of the teams since that meeting. Monte Vista lost some games and University City went on a roll and win their league.

Monte Vista who came into the semi-finals contest seeded #4 looked to avenge the earlier season loss. The Centurions figured they wouldn’t have a problem moving the ball as their offense averaged more than 30 points a contest.

But the Monarchs had other ideas and they stuck to their guns playing defense and in the first quarter the only scoring would come courtesy of a Monte Vista field goal to make it 3-0. It wouldn’t be until midway through the second quarter Jahmon McClendon for the Monarchs scored a 3-yard touchdown to make it 10-0. They would tack on more as the defense got in on the action as Torrey Mack with about two minutes remaining in the half picked off Gunnar Gray and ran it all the way back to the house for a 34-INT pick six to extend the lead 17-0.

The Centurions couldn’t believe that were down and being smacked around as they were the ones usually doing the smacking. They would finally get on the board as Gunnar Gray found Jurne Smith but the PAT was blocked. The score was now 17-6 in favor of Monte Vista and that would be the score at the intermission.

The start of the third quarter went the way of the Monarchs as McClendon again was able to rumble his way into the end zone this time for 26-yards to make it 23-6.

Right after this score was when the Centurions woke up offensively as they would pull within 23-14 on a E’Lonie Rico touchdown run.

University City to start the fourth quarter would again get the big play as Marcel Patterson was able to break away for a 74-yard run which cut the Monarchs lead 23-20.

However that would be the closest the Centurions would get as Monte Vista pretty much put the contest away as Levi would score the final points to make it 30-20.

On the night, McClendon smashed his way through the Centurions defense for 145 yards and a couple scores.

Monte Vista after losing last season in the semi-finals at home to Santana in the last minute 35-32 were considered a definite favorite in Division IV to reach the championship and even win it. However losing some early games in the season put them at the #4 seed.

With the win the Monarchs will now face the undefeated San Diego Cavers who are 12-0 and in the championship game for the first time in 48 years. Monte Vista on the other hand is in the section championship game for the 5th time overall and 2nd time in 5 years which was back in 2013 when they lost 7-0 to Sweetwater.
