ECPREPS BASKETBALL REPORT

By Adam Paul

SPRING VALLEY – In a battle between two familiar Grossmont league foes the Monte Vista Monarchs behind senior Deondre McHale and his fiery 32 points were able to pull out the close 64-61 victory over the Granite Hills Eagles on opening night.

The Eagles took an early lead but the Monarchs decided to turn up the heat with their defense and were able to go on an 8-0 run with about five minutes in the first quarter to take an 11-4 lead. They would never relinquish that lead as they would outscore Granite Hills 17-0 in the first quarter.  The action would heat up for both teams as each team went on a scoring terror. The Eagles would outscore the Monarchs 33-21 in the second quarter but unfortunately still trail but only by a score of 38-33.

Things would start off in the second half in favor of Monte Vista as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead to increase their lead to 44-33 with about six minutes left and would eventually outscore Granite Hills 15-11 to lead by nine points after three quarters of action.

More heated action in the fourth quarter the Eagles cut the Monarchs lead to single digits including 53-49 with about 6 minutes, 56-50 with about 5 minutes, and would pull within a basket at 56-54 after a three point make by Austin Ballo with 3:43 left in the game. No matter how hard the Eagles tried they just couldn’t get over the hump as Monte Vista kept boarding and putting up shots. Both squads went back and forth in the waning moments of the contest in which the Eagles again would pull within two points with 7.1 second remaining but they had to foul and Monte Vista would make one of the two shot to increase the lead 64-61. Unfortunately the Eagles couldn’t get a shot off as time ran out.

Leading the night for the Monarchs was McHale who roared to a double-double of 32 points and 12 rebounds. He also had 6 steals. For Granite Hills leading the way was Moses Smith who poured in 17 points while both Austin Ballo and Xavier Smith each had 11 points.

MOUNT MIGUEL 86, CHULA VISTA 32 – Opening night of the Baron/Matador Classic was good to the Matadors as they were able to easily defeat the visiting Spartans of Chula Vista. Leading the way for Matadors was Marquis Neal who poured in 19 points while Marquis Edwards banged in 17 points.
