MONTE VISTA 35, MOUNT MIGUEL 14

SPRING VALLEY – In what was one of the more eye-raising scores early on in the evening was the fact that Mount Miguel Matadors were going blow-by-blow with their crosstown rival Monte Vista.

Spreading across Social Media was the fact that the game was tied 14-14 at intermission which had people quite shocked.

Shocking people were the Matadors who set the tone early in the 58th Battle of Spring Valley as Sophomore gunslinger J.D. Laverdiere was able to move the ball down the field and cap off the drive by connecting on a short score to Eric Graham to give the Matadors the early 7-0 lead which would suffice after one period of play.

However, that didn’t last as Monte Vista got rolling behind Jahmon McClendon as he was able to find the end zone to tie the game at 7-7 for his first score of the evening.

Once again though the Matadors didn’t go down as Laverdiere was able to connect with Graham again for another touchdown.

Another Monarch drive would once again result in a touchdown run by McClendon from 9-yards out to tie the game in the first half.

Things in the second half started to go the way of the Monarchs as McClendon took over and rumbled his way for two more scores of which were his third and fourth TDs.

For the Matadors, Laverdiere would throw for 250 yards while his top target Graham caught 9 balls.

Mount Miguel (2-5, 1-1) next week will host El Cajon Valley while the Monarchs (6-1, 1-0) travel to Santee to take on the Santana Sultans on their homecoming.
