MONTE VISTA 35, WEST HILLS 0

SPRING VALLEY – In one of the most anticipated matchups on the night the Monte Vista Monarchs (9-1, 4-0) ran away with the victory over the visiting West Hills Wolf Pack (8-2, 3-1).

For the first time since 2004, the Monarchs can call themselves Grossmont League Champions as they clinched outright the Grossmont Valley League crown behind another dominating performance from UCLA-bound Jahmon McClendon.

It was a sort of a slow start in the first quarter as both teams were trying to figure each other out and would hold each other scoreless.

That would change in the second quarter after the Monarchs would force the Wolf Pack to punt. The punt with about 10 minutes left by the Pack looked like it touched the receiver for the Monarchs as it rolled and was downed at the one-yard line. The officials ruled the ball had not been touched so Monte Vista held onto possession.

Backed up at their one-yard line everyone knew who the ball was going to and on the handoff from EJ Henderson, it looked like McClendon was stopped but he broke through and once he did he was off to the races for the 99-yard score to make it 7-0. The 99-yard run by McClendon tied the CIF SAN DIEGO SECTION record and also the State Record.

Monte Vista would recover their own kickoff and again another McClendon score as he raced 19-yards to make it 14-0. After another stop on defense, the offense for the Monarchs moved the ball all the down to the 4-yard line of West Hills when McClendon punched it in to make it 21-0. Later on, McClendon would break away from the Pack and scamper to the house for a 75-yard score to extend the lead 28-0.

Moving to the second half and leading big the Monarchs would again do their thing and get the ball back on offense and once again McClendon would race for a 14-yard score to push the lead 35-0.

There was nothing the West Hills defense could do to slow McClendon down as he would go on to rack up 378 yards on the ground and score 5 touchdowns.

Offensively for the Pack, Jordin Young finished with 120 yards on 10-of-20 passing.

With the win, the Monarchs will be one of the top three seeds and also a top contender in the Division III playoffs after winning the Division IV crown last season and moving up.

West Hills will also be in the Division III playoffs as they look to stay in the top 10 for seeding purposes.
