The Mount Miguel Matadors looked to stay undefeated in the early going of the season as they took on the visiting Broncos of Vista Murrieta in the championship of the Matador Classic on Saturday evening.

Early on both teams went back and forth as each team was able to score on the other teams defense. The Broncos at the end of the first quarter would take a slim 16-14 lead over the Matadors. However in the second quarter things picked up for Mount Miguel as their defense held the Broncos to only 4 points but their offense wasn’t able to put up points as they only scored 9 in the quarter. Mount Miguel despite not scoring in the double digits in the second quarter led at the break by a slim lead of 23-20.

Mount Miguel in the second half picked things up on both ends as they limited the Broncos to 8 points and on the offensive end scored 13 points which put their lead at almost double digits at 36-28 after three quarters of play.

Leading the way for the Matadors was the trio of Sylena Peterson who scored 16 points, Camara Douglas who had her usual double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds and Citlalli Gurrola who drained 3 three pointers enroute to 12 points.

Other contributors were Tiaja Bennett who scored 5 points and had 3 steals.

Mount Miguel would need all the scoring they could get in the fourth quarter as Vista Murrieta tried to fight their way back as they were able to put up 19 points but Mount Miguel would score 15 points to claim the four point victory and also the championship and push their record to 7-0 on the season.
