LA MESA – The Grossmont Foothillers in a last minute scheduled contest to avoid playing only 9 games hosted Rancho Verde.

To say it was a rough night for the Foothillers would be an understatement as Rancho Verde who came into the contest ranked #39 in California had their way the entire evening. After each team started the contest punting the Mustangs would take advantage on their next possession. After fielding the punt the Mustangs would drive down the field and put the first points on the board with 7:06 on a 15-yard rushing touchdown.

Trailing 7-0 the Foothillers had a golden opportunity to put some points on the board but came up empty as they missed a 34-yard field goal. The missed field goal would be met with another score by the Mustangs as they took advantage and again drove down the field and score on an 11-yard pass to make it 13-0 with 11:54 remaining in the first half.

Things looked up for the Foothillers as they showed some signs that they could compete with the Mustangs but unfortunately, that door would be shut as they would score a couple more times on a 53-yard pass and a 3-yard run to extend the lead 27-0. Rancho Verde added another score to go up 33-0 on a punt return for a score right before half.

Nothing on the night went right for Grossmont as Rancho Verde showed they were the far superior team and continued to do so in the second half as they would go on to score four more times in the half to round out their impressive scoring.

Grossmont would finally get on the board on a 27-yard field goal for their first points since the 2:27 mark of the second half of their game against San Marcos a couple games ago.

On the night the Mustangs rolled up 687 yards of offense behind 384 yards passing from freshman quarterback AJ Duffy who finished 21 of 30 passing including 4 touchdowns.

On the night Jaime Odom for Grossmont was 14-24 with 84 yards and an INT. Robert Tucker garnered only 12 yards on 6 carries, Demari Crawford and Jarrod Lacy each got some playing time at running back and had 12 yards on 4 carries and 8 yards on 7 carries respectively. The Receiving corp on the night was led by Skip Waltower who had 3 catches for 44 yards and Zak Farris also had 3 receptions for 18 yards.

Next week the Foothillers who have struggled their last two games hope to reverse their woes as they take on a Poway team at home who has had their own struggles this season as they celebrate homecoming in La Mesa.
