VALHALLA 20, KEARNY 12

EL CAJON (9-27-19) – Early on the visiting Kearny Komets showed their athleticism as they took a 6-0 lead when Nico Estrada broke through and dashed his way for a 60-yard score.

Valhalla would answer back in the second quarter when Luke Pillsbury hit Gavin Nagel for a 60-yard strike to take a 7-6 lead.

After a touchdown-saving interception by Kearny, Valhalla wouldn’t allow any points and got the ball back.

Kegan Baker who would run for over 200 yards on the night would find his way in the end zone as he rolled his way for 57 yards which would set up a 10-yard score to give the Norsemen a 13-6  lead.

On the next possession by the Komets, the Norsemen would recover a fumble but wouldn’t get anything as Kearny picked off a pass. The interception would lead to no points despite marching down the field as a 34-yard field goal attempt was missed.

Valhalla would start the second half moving down the field where Baker ran into the end zone from a couple of yards out to make it 20-6.

Kearny would pull within 20-12 with about 4 minutes remaining in the game but that would be the closest they would come.

Baker would tally 2 touchdowns to go with his big yardage on the night.

It was a big win by Norsemen as they try and position themselves in Division III playoff picture and a win against the Komets who came into the contest at #11 definitely bolstered it.

Valhalla with the victory moves to 3-2 and next week will host the Grossmont Foothillers on the opening night of Grossmont Hills League play.
