EL CAJON (10-11-19) – In what would turn out to be an instant classic on homecoming night out at Valley Stadium the Grossmont Foothillers would rally from an 11 point deficit to stun the home team Granite Hills Eagles.

A back and forth affair would start with Eagles quarterback Justus McComb connecting with Carlos Deleon for 18-yards to give them an early 7-0 lead halfway through the first quarter. Grossmont would answer quickly thanks to Robert Tucker who zipped his way past the Eagles defense for 67-yards.

After a 4:30 drive by the Eagles, McComb would throw his second touchdown to Richard Harris for 23-yards to give them a 13-7 lead after a Grossmont blocked the PAT. The Hillers answered with another score thanks to Tucker who found the end zone from 13-yards out. They would eventually take a 21-13 lead after a defensive hold and a huge run by Tucker for 55-yards and a score, his third of the game. Grossmont would lead by eight with a little over four minutes to go in the first half.

Granite Hills would actually answer with another after driving down the field for four minutes and Keyvon Martin punching it in from 1-yard out but the two-point conversion would fail thus the Hillers would lead 21-19 at the intermission.

The start of the second half started well for the Eagles as they retook the lead thanks to McComb who once again found Harris for a 36-yard score to make it 25-21 with 8:47 left in the third quarter after another failed 2-point conversion.

It would be a while for another score as the game turned into a stalemate and then Granite Hills would eventually extend their lead even further thanks to an interception of Jaime Odom which set up a Jaquayle Hodges 18-yard touchdown to make it 32-21 with 8 minutes remaining in the contest.

For Grossmont, this turned into déjà vu all over reminiscent of the game against Madison a couple of weeks ago but this time the Hillers would persevere. Jaime Odom this time around would take matters into his own hands as he scored from 2-yards out and after a stop on defense he would zig-zag through the Eagles defense from about 60-yards out for the go-ahead score to give the Foothillers the 33-32 lead with 1:25 remaining in the ballgame after the missed 2-point conversion.

Granite Hills would have one more shot to try and make a comeback but the defense of the Foothillers made their stance and didn’t allow them to cross the 50-yard line which finished off the huge comeback and the big victory and spoil the Eagles homecoming night.

On the night for Grossmont, Odom threw for 116 yards on 16-28 and he also rushed for 111 yards and 2 scores while McComb for the Eagles threw for 265 yards on 23-39 passing and had 2 touchdown passes along 8 carries and 20 yards on the ground.

The ground game for the Foothillers wasn’t all Odom as Robert tucker ran for 171 yards and 3 scores and also caught 3 balls for 46 yards. On the other side for the Eagles, their leading rusher was Hodges who finished the evening with 58 yards on 9 carries.

Leading the way for the Foothillers receiving wise was Brody Schicker who caught 6 balls for 31 yards and Adam Richmond who had 2 receptions for 18 yards. For the Eagles, Carlos Deleon had 7 catches for 85 yards, Richard Harris 5 catches for 77 yards and James Johnson caught 8 balls for 67 yards.

Next week the Eagles will try and get their first win in Grossmont Hills league play as they travel to Lakeside to take on the El Capitan Vaqueros. Grossmont, on the other hand, will try and package their big win over Granite Hills into a possible upset win over Helix in the “Battle for the Musket” rivalry game.
