Offense Not a Problem as Knights Secure First Win

EAST COUNTY PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

MORENO VALEY (12-01-17) – Foothills Christian is finally into the win column after securing a convincing wire-to-wire 72-51win over Rancho Verde on Friday night. The Knights topped the Mustangs at the Corona Centennial BattleZone Tournament with a much-needed boost as they head into a strange match-up Saturday night with Santa Clarita Christian who’s roster consist of three former Knights starters and one sibling of the bunch.

Senior TEASHON CHERRY was happy to see the Knights get on the right track  and into the winner’s circle. “It felt great I think we just came out tonight with more intensity than what we had and that’s the difference. Me and DJ (DERRICK CARTER-HOLLINGER) got it going tonight and they just trusted us with the ball. We have a great team and I think this is what we needed to get us over the hump, and it showed tonight on both ends of the ball” Cherry said after the win.

The Knights are likely to see their pre-season #1 ranking dip slightly after a 1-3 start, especially considering Mission Bay’s win over a Los Altos team that Foothills fell to in their season opener, but the offensive duo of Taeshon Cherry and Derrick-Carter Hollinger are a tough task for most defenses.

Through four games Foothills Christian has averaged 73-points per game and sports other weapons like guard JAREN NAFARRETE and YASSINE GHARRAM who are as potent as the top scorers for many teams around the county.

Foothills Christian takes on a usually high powered offense in Canyon Crest on December 15th at the Grossmont Invitational, but before that they will close out the BattleZone against Santa Clarita Christian at 4:30 pm tomorrow (December 2, 2017) morning. Santa Clarita Christian Forward Jordan Starr was a member of the Knights Championship run two seasons ago before his father Kelvin took the head coaching position at The Masters College. Starr’s younger brother Caden is another up and coming recruit in the 2019 class. Santa Clarita is also now home to T.J. and Kaleb Lowey who were members on the Knights roster last year.

As an interesting note, Foothills Christian and Grossmont will square off for the first time ever in a regular season meeting on December 22nd. The only previous meeting between what might be the closest geographical neighbors in the San Diego Section was an Open Division Quarterfinal match-up that Foothills Christian won en-route to their seventh CIF Championship and first Open Division title in February of 2016.
