LA MESA – In one of the most brilliant of gems pitched lately in San Diego, Thomas Caneday dominated the La Costa Canyon Mavericks (17-15) allowing no-hits on Saturday morning.

Caneday for the Helix Highlanders (20-12) wasn’t the only one who was throwing as Mavericks pitcher Jack Maes struck out 5 in his six innings of work.

Offensively the Highlanders would strike first in the bottom of the second inning as Justin Cervantes would knock in Adam Martinez to make it 1-0, a couple of batters later with 2 outs Alonzo Richardson ripped a double that plated Noah Lane to give Helix a 2-0 lead.

Helix would add another run in the bottom of the third inning when Lane roped a ball to left field for a double to bring home Carlos Oquita to make it 3-0.

The three runs scored by the Highlanders was all Caneday would need as he retired the Mavericks hitters one by one.

Despite walking Austin Machado to lead off the top of the seventh inning Caneday promptly retired the next three batters to end the game.

Maes took the loss for the Mavericks as he gave up 3 runs in his 6 innings of work.

Caneday on the other side for the Highlanders allowed no hits in his 7 innings of work in which he walked one while striking out 6 on the day.

The loss officially eliminates the Mavericks from the playoffs while the Highlanders will now stay home to take on the Poway Titans who are the third seed in the Open Division. The elimination game between them will take place on Tuesday the 21st at Helix High at 3:30 PM.
