EL CAJON – The Eagles came into the contest against the Foothillers off of their emotional victory over Steele Canyon last week and looked to continue their momentum and stay unbeaten.

Coming into the contest at 6-0 and looking to improve to 7-0 they would have to face the second-best team in the Hills league the last couple of years. On the other side, Grossmont came into the contest with a disappointing 2-4 record after playing a tough schedule and had a big 51-7 victory over Valhalla the previous week.

Everyone who was in attendance looked forward to a great game but what was received was a lot of craziness that saw a variety of things. On one hand the Foothillers turned the ball over times to an estimated 25 penalties for both squads and a good amount of scoring, and last but not least a scoreboard malfunction to complete the madness.

Despite the craziness of everything, there was one player who would step up and that was Chris Ostreng of Granite Hills who took the Eagles on his back and accounted for all 6 touchdowns. On the night, Ostreng passed for 3 scores and ran for 3 more against the Foothillers defense.

The Eagles would take a quick 21-0 lead as Ostreng would account for 2 of his 3 rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. Prior to the scoring, the defense was able to set things up as they recovered a Grossmont fumble which would give the Eagles the ball in Hillers territory at the 28-yard line.

Trailing the Foothillers knew they would be in more trouble if they allowed Granite to get any further ahead. Instead, they went to business and showed they wouldn’t go down without a fight as Jaime Odom found Skip Waltower for the nice 43-yard touchdown with 10:20 remaining in the first half.  Both teams would tare touchdowns before a 61-yard explosive play from Ostreng who was able to find James Johnson which set up a field goal just before the half to give the Eagles a 30-13 lead at intermission.

Grossmont in the second half figured their luck would change as they came out fired up looking to come back and pull off the upset. They would force an Eagles punt but on offense, a missed exchange between Odom and the RB would lead to the Eagles regaining the ball on the 5-yard line. Granite would score on when Ostreng punched his way into the end zone for his third score of the night to put the Eagles up 37-13.

The Foothillers didn’t go down and were able to cut into the Eagles lead when Odom was able to find Desmond Carter on a 32-yard touchdown strike to make it 37-20. Granite would match the Grossmont score with one of their own when Ostreng hit Jacob Setterberg for his first receiving touchdown of the year to make it 44-20 with 9:13 remaining which also killed any hopes of any type of Foothillers comeback.

Offensively for the Eagles, Ostreng finished 11-21 with 235 yards and 3 touchdown passes and 3 rushing touchdowns. His top targets included Johnson who caught 4 balls for 129 yards and Richard Harris who also hauled in 4 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. For Grossmont, Odom finished the night 15-38 with 178 yards and 2 touchdowns and also 2 interceptions. Receiving wise for the Hillers, Waltower hauled in 5 balls for 101 yards while Desmond Carter caught 6 balls for 62 yards.

Next week the Eagles look to keep their undefeated streak alive as they take on the El Capitan Vaqueros at home while Grossmont will travel to Helix to take on the Highlanders in the annual “Battle of The Musket.”
