CHRISTIAN 14, MORSE 8

SAN DIEGO – Coming into the contest the Christian High Patriots offense was averaging about 40 points a contest and had been on a roll as of late. However, taking on league foe Morse wouldn’t be an offensive showcase.

Were the Patriots overlooking the Tigers as next week they take on highly ranked Cathedral Catholic or was it the fact that Morse had a gameplan?

Whatever the case Christian wasn’t really able to get anything going as they turned the ball over four times in the ball game and they would trail 8-0 with about eight minutes in the game.

However, all was not lost as there was still time in the game for the Patriots to make a move and indeed they did. With about seven minutes remaining the defense came up big as Justin Roehl was able to step in front of a pass and make the interception. The interception gave the Patriots momentum as Owen Easley would drive down the field and score on a 2-yard keeper and score the 2-point conversion to knot the game at 8-8.

On the ensuing drive for the Tigers, the Patriots defense would again come up big and force the Tigers to punt away. This time on offense for the Patriots another weapon took over in Javier Jimenez who would dart through the Morse defense covering 60 yards all the way down to the 2-yard line. With a little over 3:30 minutes to play Easley called his own number and plowed into the end zone for the score.

Morse early on would take the 8-0 lead as they recovered an onside kick to open the game and offensively moved down the field 44 yards before scoring.

That would be the only time they would score when in the red zone of the Patriots despite having eight other opportunities to do so. On all the other chances the Patriots defense really stepped up big.

The defense was the entire theme the whole night especially when it came to the run game. Last week the Tigers set the run game on fire when they rushed for 608 yards as a team against the La Jolla Vikings. However, the Patriots were able to slow down the running attack of Morse as they only limited them to 165 yards on the evening.

For the Patriots, Jimenez would rack up 152 yards on 16 carries.

For his efforts on the night Patriots quarterback, Easley was selected as the SDFNL Player of The Game.

Christian who came into the contest ranked 11th and moved to 7-0 (2-0) with the win will next week travel to take on the highly ranked Cathedral Catholic Dons who beat Saint Augustine 34-14 in the Holy Bowl.
