69TH ANNUAL LIONS TOURNAMENT

PATRICK HENRY 3, MATER DEI CATHOLIC 1

Fresh off their big victory at Petco Park on Saturday the Patrick Henry Patriots couldn’t rest on their laurels and on Monday afternoon showed they had no big stage hangover as they rallied to beat the Crusaders of Mater Dei Catholic in the opening of pool play in the Premier Division.

Early on in the top of the first inning, the Crusaders took advantage of a couple of walks and base hits to push across the first run when Robert Carrillo hit into a fielders choice to make it 1-0.

Patrick Henry looked like it would erase the run in the bottom of the first inning as Dante Juliano led off with a base hit, he would be picked off at first base, Tomas Gagliano with one out walked and Ryan Preciado laced a base hit. Neither would advance any further.

Another opportunity presented itself to the Patriots in the bottom of the second inning as Max Shabestari led off with a base hit, a couple of batters later after advancing to second on an error Garrett McKee advanced him to third base, McKee would steal second base, Ryan Miller followed with a walk to load the bases. Once again the Patriots wouldn’t cash in.

Moving along later in the game after a couple more opportunities the Patriots would finally cash in starting with a hit by pitch to Gagliano to start the bottom of the fifth inning, he would advance to second base on a groundout by Preciado, another groundout advanced him to third base, a walk to Jonathan Marshall followed by a single by Shaebestari which brought home Gagliano to tie the game at 1-1.

After getting out of the jam in the top of the sixth inning the Patriots saw their fortunes continue as Miller walked, Juliano singled, Gagliano walked to load the bases, Preciado drew another walk to bring home Miller to give them a 2-1 lead and Mateo Medina hit a sacrifice fly bringing home Juliano to extend the lead to 3-1.

Now with a two-run lead, the Patriots behind reliever Andrew McAlpin went to business in the seventh inning.

McAlpin took only a small handful of pitches to retire the Crusaders in order all on ground balls to preserve the victory and pick up the save in the process.

Rocco Gurrolla for the Crusaders took the loss as he went 1.1 innings while giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and walked 3 batters in relief.

On the other side for the Patriots it was Max Jones who tossed 6 innings in which he gave up the 1 run on 3 hits while walking 3 and fanning 5 on the day.

Patrick Henry with the victory has now won three games in a row and pushes their record to 14-5-1 overall on the season.
