#6 MATER DEI 75, CHRISTIAN 71

Tonight was a test for the Christian Patriots as they took on the highly ranked Crusaders of Mater Dei. It was a test because even though the Patriots came into the contest unbeaten it was felt that the schedule they played wasn’t strong.

However the Patriots even though they didn’t get the victory proved doubters wrong as they gave the Crusaders a battle until the end. Things didn’t go the way of the Patriots in the first quarter as Mater Dei quickly jumped out and used their speed and shooting to take the first quarter and lead 28-17.

Christian in the second quarter was able to slow down things a bit and get back into the contest pulling within single digits but Mater Dei quickly turned the tempo up and built their lead to more than double digits to lead 45-31 at the break.

However after intermission a brand new ballgame broke out as the Patriots turned the tables on the Crusaders and came out on fire. The Patriots would turn the tempo around on the Crusaders and quickly go on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit 45-36. That deficit would be cut even further as Christian continued that run all the way to a tune of 12-0 to pull within 47-44.

Leading the charge in the third quarter for the Patriots was Kristin Williams who drilled a couple three pointers for 6 of her 21 points on the night. Of those 21 points 18 came on three pointers. On the night she nailed 6 3-pointers.

Mater Dei would finally score at the 4:40 mark of the third quarter and would eventually tie the Patriots 15-15 in the quarter and lead 60-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

“We are a young team but we showed people what we are about tonight.” Said Patriots coach Vickie Carrington.

That the Patriots did as they really poured it on the fourth as the offense really stepped things up scoring 25 points led by Simone James who scored 9 of her game leading 25 points. Christian in the fourth period was able to outscore the Crusaders 25-15 and really had a chance in the final couple of minutes. The Patriots were able to cut the lead down to a couple of points but couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity which allowed the Crusaders to push their lead to four points in the final thirty seconds of the contest.

Besides Williams and James, Raelyn Mueca scored double digits as she put up 15 points and Hannah Richardson scored 12 points and Jasmyn Crawford put up 9 points.

“I am super proud of my girls and the effort tonight. Simone James really turned things up in the fourth quarter, both James and Richardson really helped stepped up. A big shout out to Raelyn Mueca for her effort and Kristin Williams for her consistency.”

If the Patriots keep playing the way they did tonight they definitely will be in the running to be considered a top team in the county.
